Suggestions / Complaints

From time to time parents may wish to make suggestions or complaints with the view to improving the school's performance. Generally, this is best achieved through discussion with your child's class teacher or the Principal. A formal procedure is available, please contact the office for an appointment time.

Money Collection

Any monies payable to the school (e.g. for visiting performances or sporting excursions) should be placed in a sealed envelope, clearly labeled and presented to the class teacher in the first instance.

Large payments e.g. deposits for major excursions or school fees) should be made by cheque if possible.

Large amounts of cash should be personally delivered by an adult, or should you wish, may be deposited by your child at the front office immediately when they arrive at school.

Emergency Contact

Please ensure that we have up-to-date contact numbers so that we can contact you for any reason.

Labelling Clothes etc

Please take the time to label all clothing and other belongings, e.g. lunch boxes, drink bottles, pencil cases, etc. The Lost Property box testifies to the number of items of clothing lost by children and never claimed. Encourage your children to be responsible for their clothing. At the end of each term all lost property is displayed for collection and any unclaimed items are recycled through the Clothing Pool.

Taking Children From School

There will be occasions when parents need to collect children from school for appointments. For safety reasons, all visitors to the school must report to the front office upon arrival. A note to advise the class teacher should be sent with the child in the morning. When collecting your child please firstly go to the administration area where the office staff will assist you. Students are not permitted to wait in the playground or school grounds during lesson time to be collected by parents.

Assembly/Recess/Lunchtime

Assemblies
School assemblies are held in the hall in most weeks. These assemblies are the main arena for regularly celebrating student achievement. Awards are distributed and student work shared. There is usually also time for a song or performance of some kind. Our assemblies are hosted by student councilors and parents and friends of the school are welcome.

The Infants assembly is in the hall on a Monday at 2.25pm
The Primary Assembly is held in the hall most Fridays at 12.40pm

Morning Assembly
Students assemble in the top quadrangle each morning where the are welcomed and any news is shared. On wet days children move straight to class instead of assembly.

Recess
Children move to playground and sit in designated areas to eat morning tea. Children are then released for play by the supervising teachers. Canteen orders for recess should be collected from the side window at the canteen.

Lunchtime
A class member is sent to collect class lunch box orders from the canteen. Some items from lunch orders need to be collected from the canteen side window at second bell (ice blocks etc).
Children are supervised by a teacher whilst eating lunch. All food is to be eaten in designated areas. Children remain in place until teacher is satisfied that the area is clean and then releases them to play. They may proceed to canteen after they have finished eating if they wish to make a purchase.

Lunches

All children should be provided with a nutritious lunch. A school canteen operates each day of the week and a price list and menu is made available each term through the newsletter. Any child who does not have any lunch (for what ever reason) should report to the office immediately. A basic lunch will be provided and a note sent home with details of how much is owing. It would be appreciated if this could be paid the next day at the office.

Supervision Before School
There is no formal supervision before 8.40am. The Graham Drive crossing flags are put into place each morning at about 8.30am. Children who arrive before 8:40am are to remain adjacent to Canteen/Library/Office where they are to sit and play quiet games or read a book. At the 8:40am bell children should place bags outside their classroom or in a designated area, they may then move to the playground. Lunch orders should be put in the box located at the canteen, near the hall before school.

Supervision (Lunchtime) continued …
A rostered teacher initially supervises canteen lines to ensure orderly operation. A teacher then patrols designated top quadrangle, canteen and buildings areas. Two canteen lines operate - one for infants and one for primary.

The second half of lunch is designated for play and students may use the buildings area, or the north or south ovals where teachers are rostered on supervision duty.

After School
A teacher is rostered to supervise bus lines and another teacher escorts students across the Graham Drive crossing.

School Enrolment

Enrolling Your Child

Please complete the enrolment form and present it at the time of enrolment along with the child's original birth certificate, immunisation certificate, and if transferring from another NSW Department of Education school, a copy of their transfer certificate too. Children who are enrolling in Kindergarten for the first time will be invited to several Orientation Days in Term 4 of the preceding year.

Our school operates under a zoning policy and out-of-zone enrolments are not always possible.

Student Health

Allergies
It is important to inform the school of any allergies and the appropriate medical response in the case of an allergic reaction. These details are usually taken upon enrolment but must be updated if there are any changes.
See also 'Canteen" to see what to do about food allergies when ordering lunches.

Sickness
Children should not be sent to school if they are unwell. Any child who becomes sick at school will be attended to and parents may be contacted to collect them. Contact telephone numbers are essential.

Medicine
In the interests of all children, it is a requirement tha all medications brought to school be handed in at the school office where staff will oversee distribution and dosage. Children who have short term medication and require a dose to be administered at school must bring the medication and an explanatory note to the Office. It is an advantage in such cases if the amount of medicine required for school doses is decanted and kept at school. This prevents the medicine being accidentally left at school and the child missing the night time dose. Clear labelling is essential.

Medication (on-going)
Long term medication (e.g. Ritalin, dexamphetamine) must be brought to the school by a parent. No students are permitted to carry or self administer this medication.s at school prescribed medications must be sent in its original container with a note stating name of child, the dosage and time it is to be administered.

Any child on long term medication must present a form that has been completed by their doctor. These forms are available from the office and should be returned as soon as possible.

First Aid
First Aid for minor injuries are provided by our school assistants. Any child requiring first aid should report to the nearest teacher or the front office. The school also operates a Sick Bay for short term illness. If illness persists or an injury is considered more serious than a bump or scratch, parents will be contacted, so please keep the contact phone numbers up-to-date. All teaching staff are trained in emergency care and resuscitation and many hold St John's First Aid Certificates.

Illnesses/Infectious Diseases
In the event of your child contracting a contagious disease you should notify the school immediately. Details of exclusion times are available from the office. It is important to indicate any illnesses or disabilities, and particularly important to provide contact telephone numbers in case of emergency. If you do not have details of contacts, telephone number of doctor etc. It would be appreciated if you could please advise the office when they are known. If at anytime your address or telephone number changes please also advise the office immediately so our records can be updated. A table follows that is a Health Department guide to the length of time children are to be withdrawn from school for common childhood complaints. If in doubt, check with your family doctor.

Immunisation
All children should be immunised before starting school. This includes a measles and mumps vaccine. It is now a Department of Education and Training requirement for school entry that parents provide documentation of the immunisation status of each child on enrolment. This certificate is available from your doctor or local community nurse when the child had their last needle. If you do not produce this certificate and an outbreak occurs, your child may not be allowed to come to school. The Department of Health will liaise with the school and the home in this matter.

Head Lice

Headlice (Pediculosis)
Headlice, nits (the eggs of headlice) are a recurring problem in all schools. Very few children escape having headlice at some time during their years at school as nits are friendly creatures. Please help us to help you by supporting the following simple routines:

· Check your child's head for lice each week in cooler weather and more often in summer;
· If you do find lice, ask the chemist for the correct shampoo to treat them. As a precaution you should treat others in the family (maybe yourself!) Re-treat within 7-10 days to ensure that you get any resistant late hatchers.
· Don't take offence if we contact you to collect your child if we detect that they have headlice. As headlice are highly contagious they are not permitted at school if there is any trace of pediculosis in their hair. Children may return to school immediately following correct treatment.
Notes will be sent home to notify if an outbreak occurs. That is a time for all families to check and treat to break the cycle of infestations.

School Uniforms

Children are encouraged to wear a clean and tidy official school uniform with pride each day. The exception to this is special days eg. "Mufti Days".

Should your child be out of uniform for a special reason a note of explanation to the teacher would be appreciated. Variations on the standard commercially available school uniform (e.g. denim or board shorts) are discouraged.

Summer Uniform
Boys: Navy blue shorts, school polo t-shirt, white socks, black shoes.
Girls: Blue striped uniform or navy blue tailored shorts or navy blue "Netball" electric pleated skirt or a skort and school polo t-shirt, white socks and black shoes.

Winter Uniform
Girls and boys: Plain navy blue tracksuit, school polo t-shirt with black shoes.

Boys shorts are available from: Oze Kids Market Street, Woolgoolga; Target, Big W, Lowes, etc.
Girls uniforms, skorts & shorts available from: Oz-e Kids
Tracksuits available from: Target, Big W, Oz-e Kids.
Netball/pleated skirts available from: Target, Big W, Cabas.

The following items are all printed with our school logo and are available from the front office:
Polo T-shirts, Jackets, Jumpers and Hats.

· It is expected that all students will wear an official Sandy Beach hat.
· The school has a limited supply of second hand uniforms available from the office.

School Contributions
School Contributions are levied on the families of the school to enhance the opportunities available to the students. The level of contribution is determined each year after consultation with parent and staff representatives. The following contributions are recommended for 2008.

Why do we seek School Contributions?
At Sandy Beach School we seek excellence in everything we do. We believe that your children deserve the best. School Contributions are an investment that families make to ensure that we continue to provide "oceans of opportunity" at Sandy Beach. Government funding pays the staff, most of the bills and for some of the learning materials. The government also pays parents the back-to-school allowance. The school contributions that you make directly to us, allow us to provide the extras such as art supplies, musical instruments, sound and lighting for our plays and musicals, sporting and play equipment, attractive gardens and more. You notice the difference!

Are book packs and textbooks included?
Yes! As part of the general school contribution, we provide specially selected book packs for each class. In 2008 the books included in the pack will be given out during the year by the classroom teacher. Any textbooks in the pack will be given out as soon as the fees have been paid. We believe that the book packs are good value because we buy in bulk and can pass on the savings.

When do the fees need to be paid?
School Contributions need to be paid at the commencement of the school year. As an incentive for prompt payment, any families who have paid their School Contribution for the year before then end of Week 3 of first term, will be entered into a draw where 3 families will receive a $50 refund.

What if a family is experiencing financial difficulty?
Most families budget to make their school contribution a priority. Where a family has financial difficulty in paying the fees, they may seek to pay by installments or may contact the school for financial assistance. Some families that cannot pay their school contributions volunteer their time to help at the school, or make a special effort to support the P&C in fundraising activities. Remember, if everyone contributes the children are the winners!

We believe that Sandy Beach PS provides outstanding value for money and appreciate the investment families make to help us provide quality schooling. Thanks!

$65 for one child including Book Pack
$110 for two children includes 2X Book Packs
$150 for three or more children includes 3+ Book Packs

Parents and Citizens Association ( P.& C.)

An enthusiastic and friendly P&C meets in the Library on the fourth Monday of each month commencing at 7.00pm. We urge all parents to attend these very important and informative meetings.

Child Protection Program

Our school provides lessons specifically designed to protect children from abuse of any kind. Lessons are part of our personal development curriculum and operate within the Board of Studies syllabus and Departmental guidelines. Child protection lessons are taught from K-6 and parents should contact the school if they want their child excluded from these activities.

Custody of Children

It would assist our school if the Principal was informed of the conditions of custody when parents are separated. This is most helpful if a parent without permanent custody arrives at the school to see or take their child. The citing of Court Orders in this regard is essential.

School Song

We are from Sandy Beach School, we're here to learn and live
And try our best in all we do, to work and play and give
We are the school among the trees, up on the bluestone hill,
We win through in what we do, you know we always will.

On sporting fields across the zone Sandy Beach is leader,
We play to win and give our best in Bluegum and in Cedar,
For Wattle and for Banksia, to show what we can do,
And cheer the ones who have a go, red, yellow, green and blue.

The school it is a friendly place , we look out for each other.
We wear our uniform with pride and wouldn't choose another,
We are here to learn to live, to work and play in teams,
But most of all we come to school to fulfil all our dreams.

We are from Sandy Beach School, we're here to learn to live,
And try our best in all we do, to work and play and give,
We are the school among the trees, up on the bluestone hill,
We win through in what we do, you know we always will.

Media Consent (Web site appearance)

Our school seeks to share the news of our success. Our students regularly feature in local media and sometimes enjoy exposure in state and national media on television or in newspapers. Photographs and news items which identify students may also appear in the school's weekly newsletter or on the school's website. Upon enrolment we seek your consent for your child to appear in the media. This consent will remain in place unless we are otherwise notified. Sport

Our school is a member of the Public Schools Sporting Association and is involved in a great number of sporting activities both within and outside of school hours. In this way children can compete to State level in a range of sporting activities.

The school's Houses for sporting competition are:

Banksia - green
Bluegum - blue
Cedar - red
Wattle - yellow

Water

Children are encouraged to drink water regularly as part of our school's nutrition and health policy. Most teachers allow water bottles to be sipped in class. However, children should never share water bottles.
Canteen

The school operates a healthy canteen each day with different menus on offer for summer and winter. In line with the NSW School Canteens Association we offer mainly 'green' & 'amber' foods products, as well as having 1-2 'red' days each term.

All children who require a recess or lunch order should put their order in the canteen box, located near the hall door. This should be done at the beginning of the school day by:
· using a brown paper lunch bag (available from the supermarket or canteen),
· writing Child's Name, Class, Order on the bag and place money inside. Please use separate bags for Recess and Lunch. Please fold bag to prevent money falling out.
· Orders not written on a bag should also enclose an additional 5c to cover the cost of a bag.
· Change will be taped to the inside corner of the lunch bag. Children must be reminded by you to be sure to collect their change (and not throw it out with the empty bag!).

Allergies to Foods

If your child has a food allergy you must notify the school and canteen of these details. Every canteen order must highlight the existence of a food allergy for your child so you can be sure it will be prepared accordingly. If your child has a food allergy you must notify the school and canteen of these details. Every canteen order must highlight the existence of a food allergy for your child so you can be sure it will be prepared accordingly. Please do not assume that the canteen will always remember-this is not possible due to the fact that volunteers operate the canteen from day to day and they cannot be expected to remember all students particular details. Please purchase a roll of 'Red Dot Labels' and stick one on each order, together with the food allergy details to alert volunteers to your special needs.

CANTEEN HELPERS - Click here to get canteen helpers form

The Canteen Committee welcome parents and grandparents to help in the canteen on a rostered basis. If you can spare any time please complete the canteen helpers form and return it to the Office as soon as possible so we can include you on our roster.

The aim of the Canteen is to provide a variety of nutritious food at a reasonable cost to the children. Our Canteen is coordinated by Cheryl and a Canteen Committee (a sub-committee of the P&C) and relies on the help of volunteers-people like you!

Any Canteen profits are transferred to the P&C Association and are used to subsidise the school's resource budget.

If there are enough volunteers, the Canteen will be able to operate 5 days per week.

The Canteen helpers are a friendly, fun-loving lot and really each other's company while knowing that they are contributing to the school.

Parent Participation and Assistance

There are opportunities for parents to be involved in the school in the following ways:

· Canteen helpers-voluntary roster system
· By being an active member of the P & C Association
· Assisting in class activity groups, ie, craft, language, maths or computer activities

Parents are reminded that as volunteers they are in a privileged position and are expected to respect the privacy of any personal information which they may see or hear from teachers or children. Parents helpers, like any other parents, have access to teachers and the Principal to discuss matters of concern. Volunteer workers should sign the attendance books located in each classroom. All volunteer workers should become members of the P & C Association so that they are covered under Volunteer Workers Insurance. It is mandatory that all parents who assist in the school and volunteer community helpers sign a Child Protection Form.

What NOT to Bring to School

With so many children 'Learning to Live" together at our school, some items have proved dangerous or a nuisance.

· Children should not bring toys including hand held electronic games, jewellry, radios, skateboards, roller skates or other valuable items to school. They tend to cause conflict or can be a temptation and it is unpleasant when items are lost or stolen.
· Sleepers or "dangly earrings" should not be worn in ears as accidental catching of the ring may result in torn ear lobes.
· Animals-except perhaps on a supervised "pet day'
· Golf balls or super balls
· Mobile phones-Our administrative staff are able to pass on emergency messages personally so mobile phones are probably unnecessary at school. Should a child need a mobile phone before or after school, they should deposit the phone at the front office during school hours;
· Weapons of any kind including pen knives and blades in nail clippers, etc;
· Glass containers
· Thongs or sandals

Attendance

The school encourages student attendance consistent with NSW legislation. All absences must be explained. Approval should be sought from the school principal for leave of absence, e.g. family holidays during school time. Rolls are marked daily and unsatisfactory attendance will be reported to the area office. Regular school attendance is a proven indicator of later life success.
