DECIMAL FRACTIONS

Decimals are special fractions. They are always in multiples of ten, eg. tenths, hundredths, thousandths.

If a decimal fraction is written as a vulgar fraction, the denominator is always 10 or a power of 10, eg. 10, 1000.

In decimal fractions that have more than four decimal places, a space marker is used after every third digit to the right of the decimal point, eg. 0.000 462.

The decimal point is a punctuation mark that shows the units are to the left of it.

Hundreds Tens Units Tenths Hundredths Thousandths
(a)     1 6
(b) 1 7 3 8
(c)     0 2
(d)     0 0 3
(e)     0 4 6 6
The table shows the break up of the decimal fractions below.

FRACTION AND PERCENTAGE TABLE

NOTE: Percent means "out of 100." A percentage is, therefore, a fraction whose denominator is 100.  50% = 50 / 100  = 0.50  = 0.5  = 1 / 2
